ISO 9001 is an international standard that provides a full set of standardized requirements for the quality management system (QMS). The standard especially focuses on all the quality system elements a firm must have in order to get an effective system that allows the management and improvement in the quality of their products or services. Customers prefer suppliers that have this standard because it ensures that the selected company has an excellent quality management system (QMS). This accreditation shows that the organization is recognized by more than 640,000 companies all around the world.

In 1998 the British Retail Consortium (BRC) developed and introduced the BRC Food Technical Standard to be used to evaluate manufacturers of retailers own brand food products. Later it expanded into the manufacture of products for catering and production of ingredients. Its wide use outside the UK turned it into the Global Standard upon which many companies have based their supplier assessment programs. A few years later, in 2003, the BRC decided to change the name of the standard that was renamed as "BRC Global Standard - Food Products", its current denomination.

The IFS Standard (International Food Standard) has been developed under the leadership of the IFS Working Group depending on HDE (German Food Retail Association) and FCD (French food Retail and Wholesale Association). It has been designed as a tool to audit the suppliers (facilities, operational systems and procedures) by an independent third party in order to improve continuously food safety for the consumers.
